Students struggle to pay tuition amid financial crisis

College life is full of stress: midterms, final exams, intense assignments, group projects and impossible professors, but things look like they’re going to get a lot worse.

Amid the current financial crisis, many students will now have to worry about how to secure student loans through banks that have shut their doors on anyone who’s less than an ideal borrower.

And with unemployment rate rising, many parents are unable to look picture-perfect.

Books-A-Million, the nation’s 3rd largest book retailer, is going to be making a lot of people happy on September 20th. At 12:01am tomorrow, the bookseller will start selling Brisingr, the third installment in Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance series.

Brick-and-mortar retailers have been feeling the pinch from the sluggish economy. People have less money to spend, and it’s getting easier to just download a book online instead of waiting in line at midnight.

“Frugality” is the word of the year, and consumers are leaving their credit cards at home and hopping on the savings train to rich-town, making sure to bypass their favorite retailers at various pit stops along the way.

Texas Tuition Promise Fund: prepaid guilt

“We already paid for it. Now you have to go to college.”

That’s what Texas parents will be saying to their kids about 15 years from now.

Prepaid college funds carry a ton of mess with them. But Texas is starting their own version of the tried and (not so) true guilt trip, and parents are buying.

Textbook torrent: the solution to expensive college textbooks

Textbook torrent: the solution to expensive college textbooks

The average cost for textbooks and supplies last year was between 800 and 1200 dollars. New editions are curbing students’ ability to buy used books, and it’s hard to find and keep a job these days (for both the students and their parents). So what’s the solution?

Steal. Textbooks. The same way students steal music…by downloading torrents for free.

Yes, I feel bad for the authors of these textbooks, but…come on…how often do we need a new edition of “Ancient Civilizations”?

College textbooks are ridiculously expensive. And the price (in California, at least) has gone up about 30% in the last four years.

CSUN has a plan to help struggling college kids out. It’s a small plan, and it might not help much. But at least it’s something.

Fay can’t stop Broward community college enrollment

Fay can’t stop Broward community college enrollment

The slow economy and monster unemployment rate have encouraged people to go back to school and students to look for cheaper options for higher education. In South Florida, this means a huge jump in community college enrollment.

So…good for community colleges, right? Not exactly. Sure, they’re getting more money from students, but the lost money from the Legislature. The surge of students will be wrangled by the same amount of staff, the same number of parking spaces, and the same amount of room in classrooms. There’s a good possibility the buildings will explode.

Not sure what the real value is in this incomplete survey of a bunch of colleges, but the list is out, and there’s a new column in town - greenest college.

Berea College: low-income education

Berea College: low-income education

Kids from low-income families are clamoring to get into Berea College: a school with no sports teams, no fancy food, no hot tubs, and no tuition.

Students attending Berea work 10-hours a week on campus and get their food from the college farm. Their dorms are furnished with furniture from the college crafts workshops.
