Explain to me the difference between http://www.BoomRevolution.com and YouTube etc? Content is indeed king, and this “revolution” is no different than any other blog, aggregator, etc. out there. So I can paste my favourite YT videos onto their site. Where is the business model? Please help me understand!
Frankly I see the model behind social networking. But how is this different than others, who have already reached brand mass?

“We don’t want to create any barriers to entry in any way shape or form”
“I actually just trademarked the term ‘revolutionomics’. Also, I trademarked the term, ‘the virtuous entropy of the internet revolution’”
At least he admits this incongruity in the postscript. Thanks for including that bit.

You are missing the real beauty - he’s a hedge fund manager - his souls is naturally conflicted.
It is as good as he can do :) we should embrace his potential.
Great interview. The google stuff is right on and I have my own google/yahoo story tha I will post.
Long short was awesssome.
Good energy in the interview

Chris — Aside from our giving total access to their html code of their user pages and the browser-based instant messenger Echo and other unique features on BoomRev.com, the biggest difference is that YouTube is 99% user-generated content like kittens playing piano and 1% commercial TV and movie content. BoomRev.com is 99% TV clips from Def Comedy Jam to Mr. Bean and 1% user-generated content.
Mpbk — I do think and wrote as much in last weekend’s FT that content ownership is more valuable than ever — an explosion of addressable audience (the 1.5 billion people now on the Net), outlets of distribution (YouTube, MySpace, BoomRev) and instant gratification for their fans (no more waiting for a TV show to start at the time selected by some central body and approved by your govt, etc). That’s the virtuous part.
Howard, Thanks for the kind words. Always have been, always will be a conflicted soul, I suppose. Lindsay and you guys are doing a great job.

I agree with Andy, there’s more to Lindsay than just her smile. Thanks for doing the shows, I watch ‘em all the time. Haven’t visited thestreet.com in ages. As I recall every click on a page required registration. But great that it will result in more storys & viewers of wallstrip.

Cody, boomrev.com is great. Hearing you talk about the “virtuous entropy” was terrific, and I’m definitely going to be using the rev more and more as I just canceled my cable. Thanks!

Howard and Lindsay “get it”. Need anyone say more ?
Howard Lindzon One year ago
I am with andy swan on that one. Cody has a cool premise for ure, but read andy’s post
I am going to pick up a few shares of google today though. I really should not own Yahoo based on what he says. The model has zippo exciting growth the way Cody describes it.

Thanks Ray “first in first out” :)

I do think the JDSU comparison is not close to google. when talking buble. I understand wallstrip may be bubblicious for sure to outsiders, but the investing group does not have visions of $1 billion market cap and invested for specific reasons and has managed expectations :) . Google is not selling equiment to companies that have NO intention or MEANS to pay like JDSU and Cisco.
It’s pay for service.
Less equipment and way more brain power.
I just don’t buy the bubble talk

Regarding Andy’s comments about democracy — I don’t get why you guys think the current state of our so-called democracy in this country, with its two party fraternity system, is an “end-game”. Take a look at RepRev.com, for example — the end-game of total empowerment for the voter on the Internet is an actual democracy that starts right about…now hopefully.
The symbiotic relationship between the media and the government is dying as we all become the media. If the power of the press belongs to those who own the printing press, and in 2007 the printing press is free then….
Power to the people is ongoing and accelerating, no?
Howard Lindzon One year ago
Cody - you are brave. Andy is already drinking bourbon and has endless gobs of time now that he is rich.
oy :)
Andy Swan One year ago
Cody,
What we have in this country is not a democracy….and never has been. It is a representative republic and was set up that way for a reason.
The whims of the masses change with every documentary, lecture and proclamation and the founders understood this….it was NOT a decision based upon the logistics of true democracy (which reprev solves). Instead, it was an intelligent decision based on keeping changes to government policy slow and deliberate.
If we had a true democracy, we would likely never have attained civil rights for the oppressed…and might be dealing with reversing laws to limit “global cooling” from the scares of the 70s!
Personally, I think that despite its flaws and critics, the representative system is working quite well.
That said, I love your site, your attitude and your energy!! Keep it up man.

You guys think you’re so smart, but dude it’s waaaaay to early to discuss democracy. Come out to CA and you can meet Schwarzenegger — he’s always ready to talk about this stuff.

YouTube doesn’t have the balls that BoomRev has. Cody’s right - the generators can’t keep the toothpaste in the tube. They just have to realize they’re foolish to try.

Whoa! Flashback time, “Love, Peace, Power to the People, Long Hair”, “It is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius†Doodle-do-da-do-do. This is so feeling like the build up to the dot.com bust. I think I’ll go short this time.
Cody Willard One year ago
I hear ya, Richard… That’s what I was saying about the parallels with JDSU and the telecom bubble from 2000. Indeed, I’ve been raising money for the sites while the times are boomed. Buy when there’s blood, sell to the sound of trumpets, right?
I do think we’ve got a lot more upside to come, probably going outright bubblicious when the Fed cuts in a futile attempt to save housing and thereby fueling what I call an “echo techo bubble”….
Peace, love and happiness in the meantime ;)

Cody is such a charlatan. I used to love his blog until he started going nuts with his video revolution crappy website. Be original, Cody. That shit is old news and peole more talented than you can’t figure out how to make money from it. And it about money, Cody not free access. Even revolutions are about money! For a hedge fund manager you sure have a lot of time in your hands to make the media rounds.
The question you should be asking is where does Google go from here since you are still long on the stock? This is not a rhetorical question either since Google has become a very powerful company in a very short amount of time. Yes, Google dominates its market sector like no other company on earth for the exception of Microsoft, but that dominance is already causing huge problems for the search engine giant. And living up to their famous motto “Don’t do Evil†is proving to be a very difficulty task indeed. So, where does Google go from here, Cody? Is it truly just a filter of information or is it a true media company? Can you be a media company without producing any content at all of your own? Google is actually the antithesis of a media company now that it is facing so much backlash from traditional film and book publishers. No respect for copyright at all. But you wouldn’t know any of that sport since you have never created something from scratch. Violating copyright laws might not the best way for Google to make significant moves in the media market while trying to sell the image of a publisher-friendly company. In their quest for what John Battelle calls the “perfect†search Google is behaving like a neighborhood bully. The corpus of human knowledge that Larry Page talks about isn’t really a commodity although you can certainly put a price on it. Human knowledge is an organic process which cannot be control by one entity or technology platform including your funy-looking revolution website. What’s the nextbig thing in technology? I’ll tell you what…it has nothing to do with computers or stupid iphones.

Maximo - were you part of the 11 percent drawdown ? :)

While the concept of BoomRev is nice, it really fails in execution. Without the technical backbone, the concept fails — and what’s worse, when the presentation is a mess, the entire concept inherits it.
It’s a decent start, Cody, but I can’t say that it’s very good - and that’s a shame. Fire whoever has implemented your idea; fire whoever has done your branding.
Maximo Zeledon One year ago
Not at all Howard. I’m not even angry. Maybe my commentary was bit too impulsive, but at these point this conversation is an echo chamber. I sold the 70 shares of Google I had and distributed the money in ETFs and some bio tech stocks. I’m in business school at the moment and I don’t have the time to look after my portfolio and frankly I’m not as bullish on Google as many of you are. More competition is coming their way, but besides ads nothing really has worked for Google. That’s what happens when you have a cash cow. But that revenue stream is coming back down to earth. On top of that they are paying to get traffic…that just doesn’t look good. How much was it they paid to Dell? One billion? And hey paid another 1.65 billion for youtube. Anyway, Cody Willard loves to pump Apple and Google everywhere he goes and it’s getting tiresome to be honest. But I still like the guy. I just wished he was less of a charlatan. You guys are great though. I make sure everyone here at Johns Hopkins watches you guys.

Stop drinking the sauce with fucking with caffeine pills. It messes up clarity and causes one to fucking ramble on the internets, disrespecting the laws of paragraph’s.
Good interview.
Cody has an IQ, slightly under “The Fly’s.”
Nevertheless, I was impressed with his free spirit and knowledge of all things internets.
As you know, “The Fly” is an internet expert and helped Green Gore “muscle” the internet bill–many years ago.

Anyone who feels strongly about something is not necessarily a charlatan. Even if they forget to mention all of the negatives.
And disagreement is no excuse for name-calling. I thought grade-school was the last time I’d see such irrational incivility.

I will use bullet points and pie charts next time. And if you think Cody is a technolgy/Internet expert than I guess you are a fan of Mary Meeker as well. Boy!

“No.

Yeah. Your answer is a bit of let down to be honest. Nothing original. And you resort to such foul language so early in the game. There was no need for that really. But will see how fast Apple drops when Steve Jobs faces the grim ripper Tax man. All the shit gadgets won’t be able to do a damn thing. So drink up, you’ll feel better about yourself, but don’t drink too much because you won’t be ble to get it up. All that money, all that education, all those gadget–useless man. It was all a waste on you. Your girl left because she said you could not make her happy. What a mess!
