Verizon employees may soon strike. Thousands of workers congregated at Verizon’s headquarters in lower Manhattan yesterday, holding signs and threatening to start a strike on August 3rd, if both sides don’t reach an agreement. Negotiations between the telecommunications giant and the dissatisfied unions (who represent 65,000 workers) hav been pretty slow.
Employees’ contracts are up in about a week and many of their grievances relate to the usual sources of strike-starting-ire: wages and healthcare benefits. But there’s another major issue at the heart of this scuffle: outsourcing. The unions, obviously, are against it. But Verizon says it relies on outsourcing because it affords the company the flexibility to start new projects quickly and efficiently.
From the New York Times:
- Joe Connolly, president of Local 1101 of the C.W.A., said that the union was pushing for a 5 percent annual wage increase, larger pensions and expanded medical benefits. ‘Right now, employees have to make a choice: Are they going to eat or get benefits?’ Mr. Connolly said.
- In light of the slow pace of negotiations, a strike was likely, he said. ‘There’s been nothing resolved on any level at this point.’

Married to Verizon 4 months ago
Whew… here we go again. Being married to a verizon union employee, the stress in our home is a 10. Not that we haven’t endured many other past contract negotiations but it never ceases to cause a lot of stress in our home.
Meanwhile, the top executives received millions in compensation. Not fair, but then again that’s life. Thankfully, the union has always come through.
Sterling Moses 4 months ago
Executives in almost all companies make a bucket load, so that is a bad argument. Sure the stress maybe a 10 in union homes, but the same also exists for homes that do not belong to any unions. As for VZ employees, they do not have any pensions or any guarantees to any 5% pay increase, and on an anual basis their medical benefits take a hit. Still you don’t see VZ employees complaining and griping, so why are the unions being such cry babies?
Union=Protection 4 months ago
“Still you don’t see VZ employees complaining and griping…” Obviously you don’t know the ladder. Its the employees who complain to the union, the union makes a stand for the techs. I would learn a little more about unions before making a statement like that.
Kevin Plunkett 4 months ago
Sterling Moses is talking about the management employees who are not unionized. The management employees at verizon have to pay half of their medical coverage while Union workers pay nothing! The verizon Unions have 100% medical and dental coverage paid for by Verizon. And yes Executives make millions because they worked their way through education and dedication to their jobs. If only union works worked as hard as they do, maybe we wouldn’t be fighting over how much they get paid because the company would be doing much better and would be able to afford to pay them better. Also, as Sterling mentioned before the management employees take benifit hits every year. Including the loss of Pensions which oh by the way THE UNION WORKERS STILL GET. Tell me how thats fair! The Unions should be lucky they even still have a contract with Verizon.

I am a union worker for Verizon and I have to pay 50% of my benefits. So I will complain about pay and benefits because paying thousands of dollars a year for my benefits makes my paycheck take a big hit. So before you start running your mouth know the damn facts.
Wbblack 4 months ago
The managers should have fought when Ivan the Terrible took their benefits and pensions. You rolled over. The economy has been bankrupted by the very same sociopath CEO’s and Wall Street scum that you defend and seem to admire. I’m educated and I don’t earn millions and I shouldn’t. Nobody should earn millions when there are billions of people living in poverty. You’re on the wrong side. I feel sorry for you.

How could we have fought back? I’ve got 10 years in VZ management and would love to have union protection.
Jay 4 months ago
Kevin, take a close look at your statement, do you really believe that if “the union would work as hard as the executives” (as you say, which is by the way your opinion, and I don’t know what your basing this on) and the company was far more profitable, they would turn around and say let’s pay our employee’s better! Now think Kevin was that an intelligent statement. I hope you were kidding. Tell me you had a few drinks before you made this post.
Lets go a bit deeper. You want to know how it’s fair that union workers still get a pension, and management does not. Well…….it’s not Kevin, but you should be asking Verizon that question. The Union did not take away you benefits, the company did. So your are clearly a bit angry as I gathered from reading your post, and as well you should be. However it is misplaced. You have this perception that “If I can’t have it, nobody can” and that is the demeanor of a child. Do not begrudge us for fighting for what we still have. I sympathize for you, but at some point you chose to become management, or chose to start as one, and we all live with the consequences of our choices.
rr 4 months ago
Very Good Jay, and here are some more facts about our pension. Verizon stopped funding our pension fund in 1986. There is 9 Billion dollars in the fund and it grew last year buy $250 million. The Union Pension fund is 127% over funded. There is enough to cover all Union Memebers for the next century. And we have worked hard for it and have sacrificed on the picket line to keep it, where were you Kevin? And did you know that Verizon Executives base their bonus on company profit and the profit made from our pension fund. Let me say this Kevin, you and all management should be mad as hell the company did that to you. Verizon has money don’t let them brainwash. Join the fight!

You’re stressed because your husband might not have a job because he voluntarily chooses not to go to the one that he has yet the company has no heart?
Well, lady, your husband has no head!
He needs to do whatever he needs to do to take care of his family… and that means earning a living!
Union employees get much more than management employees ever got at Verizon… and yet they still complain!
In this day and age, he should be lucky he’s got a damn job, much less one where he’s fairly well paid for what he does!

Corporate greed is on the rise and all Americans suffer and its cowards like fred who make it possible. You just told that nice stressed out lady that her husband had no head and all she was doing was was bloging her feelings. I would consider that a personal attack, wouldn’t you say so Fred. And then you cry when someone attacks you verbally.
You are a little girl.

Dear Fred, read my post to Kevin, just up a few. This pertains to you as well. By the way Fred, when we fight for what the company has taken from you, you call it complaining. The union heads are the ones making all of CWA’s dues. Wake up folks and take a look @ where the Union heads live and what they make. The VZ execs are earning comparable wages to others in companies their size. They are guiding a huge ship, are ethical and must balance the stockholders’ value and the employees desire.
Slice-n-Splice 4 months ago
Ethical… don’t make me laugh. The head of this ship is raping it’s finances and letting down the most important stakeholders… it’s customers. The only people trying to get the job done right at this point is the employees. We have so many places the cable has been bad for 8+ years it’s embarrasing. The PSC is now investigating the company for a 900%… that’s right 900% increase in customer complaints. In the meantime, the company still tries to shift people out of maintenance (because it looks like a liability on it’s financial reports) and put them in jobs they make look like it is an investment. Meanwhile, we are laying out more temporary drop wires, plowing in 12 pair drops around bad cable, and patching the already patched cables as best we can…
Ethical… Our exec’s at this point are no less than crooks. 55 million dollar bonus. My God, I would love the chance to drive this company for 1/10 that. You’re an idiot….
occam 4 months ago
In ‘01 the buyout in my area was $2200 for every year of service. So if you started right out of high school at 18 you received $44,000. You are retired at 38! with a $44,000 buyout? Even if you sold your house, I would assume you have to pay to live somewhere. And you don’t address health insurance. Something doesn’t add up. Sounds like a case of union envy. Or you might have been the guy in the SQAR that got caught smoking dope.

I can’t see much support for the unions these days. Look at what it’s done to the Auto industry, and how bad things are there now because they HAD to pay somebody 50k a year to sweep floors. You union guys got to wake up and face reality.
Don’t get me wrong, the management takes advantage, overpaid(most of them) and certainly don’t deserve the bonuses they get.
My first hand experience, working with verizon techs on a weekly basis, they don’t care, they don’t fix most of the T1 line issues here on L.I. , and better yet, their management staff ORDERS them to get in and out and blame it on somebody else’s equipment.
Who’s to blame, what’s the difference, the entire company should suffer, and somebody who gives a crap should come along and take away the business.
Slice-n-Splice 4 months ago
SAB… I can’t speak for L.I. because I do not work there. As for Western MD, and WV I can tell you a few things about T1 line repairs.
Right now, if you walk into our storeroom, you will be lucky to find a T-BERD (a tool for fixing T1’s), let alone find one that is working. You will also be hard pressed to find any repeater cards that are needed for T1 lines and are often damaged by lightning. It is at the point where I work that we have no choice but to swap a working line with one that is failed in order to bring one customer back up. Is this wrong. You bet your ass it is, but when our upper level managers are directed by those in New York to cut costs even though they are making record profits, they really are doing what they have been told.
The attitude of the typical VZ tech has gone to shit, because we are tired of dealing with pissed off people. We understand your concerns, but many times we have no choice but to put bandaids on the problems and cross our fingers. We have bad cable all over the place and we can’t do a damn thing about it unless the company decides to replace it. When I started I was proud to say I worked for Bell Atlantic, had pride in my work, and wanted to make the customers happy. Now, I hate to admit it, but after being cussed one hundred too many times, I avoid customer contact as much as possible. Off the clock, I never even tell people where I work anymore, because everyone has a horror story about their service, or just dealing with getting a ticket put in.
I’ll tell you right now… I don’t know what you do for a living, but come with me and carry a 100lb ladder through the woods when it’s -10F and two foot of snow on the ground and tell me I don’t deserve the pay I’m gettin, and it might get a little ugly. Most of the people have no idea how hard this job can be at times. We have many runs of cable that is 10+ miles long and we have to find the 1/32″ of an inch where the line is shorted out or grounded along the way. Sometimes this is on a busy highway, or the cable may be hundreds of yards off the beaten path, but that’s where you must go, day or night, good weather or bad to fix the problem.
We union guys are awake…. we deserve the pay we get, and if you don’t think so, come do my job for a week… if you can carry my tools that is….
SAB13 4 months ago
I wouldn’t have a problem taking on a job like yours. I would say one in about 40 techs here on the island have a clue, and the BS customer service just keeps repeating itself over and over , we can loop the circuit, we can loop the circuit……you have tool issues, and support from your office issues, well that sucks….
But what does ANY of that have to do with the bottom line, the customer, the contract they have to get service, ummmmm that they pay for.
I too have worked for companies that don’t give me the proper support. I did what you’re supposed to do, i went to work for someone who gives a crap, and provides me with what i need to go out and do my work……
Oh and as i said before, this whole issue bothers me because my issues lately with verizon are them not fixing my customers issues, which happen to be a fire department, and yes it could possibly cost someones life because they can’t communicate to their sub station STILL, for over a week now…..
While that is a little on the extreme side, it is possible, and it disgusts me that VZ could fix it, but because of a pending strike the techs were told to NOT WORK THIS WEEK……
This case should have been an exception.
So stick that and your union whining up your ass.

Wait a minute… your customers… are you a clec? Sounds like it. Why don’t you lazy leaches run your own damn cable and fix your own customer’s issues? Part of the problem there is probably the fact that to us it looks like you are our customer and not a fire department. too bad…. Can’t wait till FIOS is fully deployed and the leaches won’t be allowed in… You work for a company that provides what’s is needed? That’s funny. What all do you need. Extra routers? Ink pens? FINALLY! A thinker. Thanks for playing. It’s so easy to get folks riled up just by typing a few things onto a screen. Unfortunately it is those simple minds that continue to listen to those that try to keep them downtrodden (unions)…
FYI, I was a steward for many years and threw in the towel when i was told by the union leaders to “slow down” because I was making my coworkers look bad. I came in, did my job, and went home. Toward the end, the company decided to dump a bunch of affirmative-actioned, surplused folks into my department. Whereas i had to study on my own time for tests, these folks were given the same job because they were surplus. And the union loved it because instead of getting 2% of a clerk’s salary for dues, they were now getting 2% of a technician’s salary.
I’d rather these knuckledraggers take out their anger on a screen than going out and cutting cables like they usually do at strike time.

You took a job that offered a certain pay level and benefits that would never have been there had union workers never fought for in the first place. Yet you still take this job apparently thinking this company loved your sweet, perfumied little ass so much they couldn’t wait to pay you the wages you got, and offer you that buyout… Why… because you are so special? all of you fail to realize one thing. who ever said anyone without a college education should be gauranteed 70 grand a year plus full benefits on the company. Look at the UAW & FORD - that really worked out well. the employees voted for a contract the company can’t pay and now 2/3 of them are forcefullyretired and the 1/3 still working are getting 3/4 of their former pay. I am friends with several Verizon FiOS techs. They work hard, and have for years at 10-12 hour days. Their families, who see very little of them due to Verizon’s employment practice of prolonged, forced overtime, deserve to, at bare minimum, have the peace of mind to know that they will have health care, decent wages, AND sound retirement money coming in. Verizon is reporting high profits, yet neglecting the Network it touts so highly, and crushing the TRUE Network which are the people who work hard everyday to serve customers. Verizon, and customers of Verizon, it is your Union workers who question why management seems to no longer care about Verizon’s customers, why they have a lack of empowerment to FIX the numerous billing issues and poor service practices. They strive daily to do the best they can to make your Verizon service perform to the best of its capability, but with management squandering money in failed overseas investments and cutting reinvestment in the workforce and Verizon’s backbone network, where do you think anyone at Verizon will be in 50 more years? Verizon has such great potential to stand up for what is right, to make the brand name something of honor and tradition of service. With what is going on now, I see the red checkmark as a bloodstreak left behind on the American people… employees (Union AND middle-management) and customers alike. CWA and IBEW workers, thank you for your hard work and dedication to me as a customer.

I wholeheartedly agree with the tension level. Both my wife and I are Verizon/CWA. I do, hoever, support the union as I have been harassed by Verizon management on several occaisions. They expect us to bridge a sale on EVERY call into our business office…regardless of a customers age, income level or physical well-being. I was suspended once for not bridging to a custommer who had multiple schlerosis, She (the customer) could barelly even speak. My managers response to that was one of uncaring arrogance. I was given a 5 day suspension because of it. That company is full of Venom and somehow I dont think Ivan Seidenberg knows or even cares as his satin-lined pockets are well stuffed with the sweatladen money WE the employees made. As a call center employee my heart goes out to the customers that actually have to navigate the endless web of our VRU’s and believe me when I say - we dont take their anger and frustration personally, We agree with them.

These workers and retirees currently pay NOTHING for their health care and this includes the entire family. They also as a union make wages of $30 per hour or more. If they are out on FMLA the company still continues to pay them their FULL wage for as long as they are out, even if it is YEARS. I can understand fighting for better pay and benefits but these employees have it made. While the rest of us are struggling to make ends meet and pay significant amounts for our healthcare and make a significatly lower wage, these employees are complaining because Verizon wants them to pay about $166 a month for healthcare for the entire family. I understand fighting for better, but give me a break, the sense of entiltement needs to be replaced with an attitude of thankfulness and gratitude.

Its true that we have fought hard for our benefits and we will continue to fight hard to keep them. Corporate America has slowly been diminishing union power in the US since the mid 60’s. There is a direct correllation to that and the ever shrinking middle class. Once the middle class has been eroded from our society where will we be? It seems to me that large companies and there neverending pursuit to remove organized labor from the workforce is moving us backwards in time.
JIm White 4 months ago
The shareholders should strike! Flat and diminishing returns caused by a management that is dazed and confused by inferior cable products which outsell and outpace Verizon quality products in growth and revenue. Why? because happy cable customers brag about the superior customer service from the “US reps and SIMPLE if NON EXISTANT computer girl that answers the phone”. VECTORING SYSTEMS which in and of themselves cause customers to become “detractors” and eliminate jobs. Why pay a US worker to answer the phone when a computer can kinda do it. Then there is the India answering connection. We all know that customers are much happier when their problems are address by someone who CAN’T SPEAK ENGLISH or SPANISH!!!!!!!!! Not to mention Verizon management or “lack there of” in marketing. These marketing people are totally incompetent vs. cables cutting-edge creative marketing. They came up with turtles, Verizon answered with a bucket guy.
Lastly, BOB is fool if he thinks Verizon management has more university degrees that the union employees. Actually from what I have read BOB is simply a fool.

We are the ones getting the job done to make you look good. Here’s a little news flash for you…….the Verizon executives are screwing you big time. You are where you are because you chose to be there. The only people that hate unions are the ones that aren’t in one and have no resources to fight for their personal fairness. If the union was fighting for you and got you something better than what you have left…..??? I’m thinking you wouldn’t be saying “No thank you. I don’t want better benefits. Please just take something back…you are giving me way to much.” If you are jealous either take your tools back or just shut your sorry butt up.

Because management lacks the negotiation skills to have Verizon pay their benefits doesn’t make that my problem…YOU MADE THE CHOICE!

As far as outsourcing jobs, this country sucks, but the ecomony is fine!!
My husband was hurt, lost his job, was getting paid low wages, blue collar worker that now has to compete with, excuse me for saying this but lower working wage grabbers who sit at the 7 eleven every day and are hired to work, don’t pay taxes and nothing is done. Collect SS and section 8, has health care because they have children and one on the way.

This company paid my medical bills, held my job (for almost 2 years), and is considerate of my limitations since I’ve returned. I will respect this Company until my last breath - I may not like what they do sometimes, but all in all it has taken good care of me. Verizon has been and always will be a terrific company to work for. The unions are on their way out and I say “Good riddance”. Unions are the reason this economy is such a mess. Their demands are ridiculous and now business has been iand will continue to go overseas. They had their usefulness in the early 1900’s when the country was industrializing but not now.
And I have heard that comment before about ” you chose management”! That is the most ludicrous statement I have ever heard. Why is it that company workers do not want to better themselves and climb the ladder? I think it is because most of them are not management material and are jealous of anyone who is!

Yes, Verizon is a great company..SO great that a member of management where I work has slept with (and admitted to sleeping with) 6 female employees. Has harassment my friend about her sales and threatened to fire her, if she didn’t essentially slam and cram customers. But he’s still on top, just sleeping around, and will emotionally and mentally beat female employees down that do not bow down to his “superior male” mind. Yes, a fine company.
A company that outsources to middle eastern people that nobody can understand. People really dread calling dsl for any kind of help, I’ve had people BEG me to try and help them so they don’t have to talk to someone overseas. And WHEN we do strike these f*ck ups will f*ck everything up and we’ll have one hell of a mess to clean up when we get back.
Belong to the Union, don’t belong to the union it’s personal preference, but when someone under qualified sh*t have your ages takes your job, don’t come crying to us…Seriously…Don’t.
collectionreprobot 4 months ago
“You chose management” is a very true & exact statement. No one is forced to go into management. I work in a call center as a Collection rep and I would NEVER go into management. This is my job; not my life. Our supervisors for the call centers are here anywhere from 6:30am to 6:30pm every day and then come in on the weekends. They chose the management job because it’s big money. They do now have to pay for their benefits but it wasn’t always that way. They get bonuses which sometimes were from our, the associates’, ideas. If we go on strike they get paid big bonuses for working our job & extra long hours. So managers made the decision to take the big bucks & bonuses over making a living to support their family while still being able to spend time with their families. Not getting to spend time with my child is not what I consider a good choice. It would be “bettering myself” but not certainly bettering my family. The stress we are under in a call center is unreal and I would love to see management do our job under the same rules & regulations they have put on us. Verizon supposedly is now trying to maintain their customer base & provide “excellent service” because they know the competition is great. However, we in the call centers are expected to provide this “excellent customer service” to our customers all in 255 seconds or less. If we talk over that time on a call, we get an IM sent to us telling us we’re talking too long. Plus it goes against us on our Performance rating. As does going on a bathroom break that’s not during scheduled breaks & lunches. Verizon needs to make up their mind if they want to maintain their customer base with quality service or if they want to continue paying outlandish amounts of money to management (from 1st level all the way to the CEO) & then cutting employees in order to do that. So our union is here to protect us against a company who wants the profits for themselves (management) but is cutting everything else & hurting the associates as well as customers in the process. Ivan made $26,000,000.00 in 2007 as his salary. He better enjoy it because if he doesn’t realize his cost-cutting on associates & customers is bringing down the reputation of Verizon than he won’t have those big bucks much longer.

Then some other fool will follow a play card and go through steps with the fool at the house. “If that does not work go to step 3″ and so on. It’s parasites like you “quitbellyaching” (who by the way won’t even use his own name) that are the problem with this country. “I will work more for less so you can put more money in your pocket boss”. Your comments have no validity what so ever, (probably because your head is so far up the company’s ass) clearly it is you who are a burden to the payroll, and if the company is looking to save money, I suggest they riff you handsome. Better yet do us all a favor and off yourself.

The simple point that the union is trying to make. If the big guys would just stop being greedy for a little bit and give back into the company it would make things a whole lot easier.
We say we have raising cost of business and raising cost of this and that. Repeat calls into the call centers, techs who get to locations and can’t fix problems and have to deal with upset customers face to face. Everyone in this company who has any customer contact knows what i mean.
I dont think anyone in the union is asking for to much, if you look at it this way. We still made money with the current contract and the costs of putting fiber down.
Now if big o’Ivan and others, takes a little less money at the end of the year and puts it back into the infrastructer of the company then i think we would be a whole lot better off. With better order systems you would cut down on repeat calls which helps acccess a ton. Better access means less outscorced phone calls which means customers dont get wrong information. A simpler system would also allow for easy modifications to orders. Instead we get a system that was a terrible port from west over to east and we are told to just deal with it. There is something really wrong when the first suggestion to fix any system problem is did you “restart”.
Sorry for the wall of text.

Your condescending attitude is what is wrong with this company on so many levels. I have also heard for over a month that there will be a huge RIFF in September. It sucks that there will be losses of any jobs. But at least from my own point of view of a couple of different departments management is just along for the ride. The have no technical knowlage, and a holier than thou attitude. I can manage myself. I need no immediate supervision. I’m given a job to do, hours to do it in. And I do that job. I do it better and faster than vendors hired to do the same job plus I’m able to troubleshoot and help fix problem that come up on existing equipment. A vendor would never do that. So we have an abundence of managment stabbing each other in the back to prove their worth. I’m being civil with bob. No insults. I’m curious why he belives he is better than everyone else. What does he bring to the table that is so benificial? I could stoop to the level of calling people dumbasses, idoits, or trolls but I refrain from that now.

Its all based on greed and envy. It seems that the perception of mngt is that the union members are greedy and should be grateful for what they have. The envy comes in when mngt realizes what the union has and asks themselves why don’t we have the same thing? Because Verizon screwed you mngt. They cut your benefits. They took away your pension. By the same token, management toes the company line rather than admit that the career development and security from third level down is nil. At the end of the day, the suits win no matter what. If everyone actually tried to work together, crush the cable companies, and TAKE CARE OF THE CUSTOMER, we would be in better shape. After all these years, the customers are getting the shaft worse than any of us, and nobody seems to care.

And heaven forbid we have an accident or develop a ‘real medical issue’ the company gives us such a hard time when it comes to paperwork you’d much rather crawl back to work then deal with it. There is absolutely no sympathy at all…
as far as us not doing a good job..You can blame that on management. When we go to work in the morning and are told exactly what to do, and what not to do,and get suspended if we dont follow rules, our hands are tied…We’ve all been told ‘the landlines are not important” ‘dont worry about the phone lines, they are a low priority’ by management..all they really care about now is fios..and even that now is starting to slip. I know anyone reading this wh
