Would Yahoo be the Katie Holmes part of the merger? It would make more sense that way, given that I’ve never really liked Yahoo but wouldn’t kick it out of bed given the opportunity…

THING ONE:
Microsoft can’t even marry their own MSN ad engine (display ads) with search term and contetual ad systems. And they are going to merge Yahoo’s sytem into the mix? In a comeptitive timeframe? I have my doubts. Serious doubts. An ad engine Microsoft might get (and it would be a worthy acquisition) but the likelihood that Microsoft will take forever to adapt it/adopt it - so forever that the Google remains mega-steps ahead (too many leaps ahead like they are with Search).
I don’t know about this recipe to bring the non-Google search/ad landscape up to snuff.
THING TWO:
Oh - it’d be SUCH a culture clash. Yahoo, who is “all about the fun”, and has HUGE offices in LA and ties to the entertainment industry is not fuddy-duddy Microsoft. (For all that they try so very hard to be cool.) Folks, this is Microsoft . The company who couldn’t even produce games in house no matter how much they paid the creative folks! They all left. (With the exception of the classic simulators - like Flight Sim.)
I worry this is a prescription that will have more side effects than benefits.

To April:
Wouldn’t it make more sense then for MSFT (a) to buy YHOO, and (b) convert their MSN users to Yahoo? Since YHOO has the culture, connections, and technology that’s more or less working and MSFT doesn’t, you could look at this as if MSFT has decided to buy rather than build.

Rick, IMHO no. Microsoft wants all of those Yahoo Groups. They want to take all of those emails and replace them with “HotMail Groups” and sell their own advertising at the bottom.
Google is not competition. Google groups have become so full of SPAM and other garbage that most people reading them have moved to other sources of Usenet. Many, like me, have a blanket killfile entry for anyone posting from Google.
In the end M/S will buy Yahoo, take what they want and move it to their brands. In 5 years Yahoo will be just a memory.
Let’s face it, they are loosing money and any protests about corporate culture are just playing hard to get. They don’t have much choice, it’s either sell out while there value is at a peak, or downsize and take a chance on surviving as they cut services.
