Nice touch with the gentlemen at the end -
“Yeah, all my grandparents watch this (CBS).”

Ugly red top cover on laptop - short
Taking advantage of a solid opportunity (and not selling out because of it) - LONG

Well done. The writing is witty and edgy.

Nice show. That map of Canada bears an uncanny resemblance to Howard who looks like he has a perennial migraine.

Man, that bald guy is an incredible actor. :)

I didn’t know Lindsay was such a “gamer”.

People should watch “Bloody Diamond” then should have heart to say, I want diamond…

Whuh?!? Replacing the Mac with a computer that looks like it broke off of a carnival ride? Oy vey!

From now on, I watch with the lower left corner blocked at all times.

Am I the only one who’s spotted Lindsay moonlighting for Seasonique? Will require a disclosure if you ever do a segment on BRL.

Ack, I too will have to cover the lower-left area of my screen. The Dell looks really out of place…and huge.

Good show otherwise; Lindsay continues to be fantastic.

The chick with the goggles on came the closest I’ve ever seen in turning real life into a broadway musical. Was hoping she would break into a gaudy rendition of “Who could ask for anything more”.

Lindsay: “I’m thirsty, I wish I had a diet Coke sitting next to my Dell computer.”

I hate it when advertising enters the content of a show.

Given that the show visuals have 3 things on screen: the laptop, Lindsay, and the video box, you’re now shilling with 1/3 of your screen real estate.

I don’t care that it’s a Dell instead of an Apple, knowing that the laptop is paid for space is the real irritator.

I’m happy to watch and ad for Dell, have you comment that we’re sponsored by Dell , but this is the equivalent of holding the beer can just so in a movie making the label legible at all times.

I’m done watching. You’ve now been removed from my blogroll and my reader.

Quincy– Call Victoria’s Secret. I think there is a natural fit here.

Christian - With all due respect, yu are ridiculous for leaving, but see ya. The show is about great companies and stocks and there are great money making ideas discussed here. A dell laptop changes nothing. Read my blog post, they are not going to covered on Wallstrip until their business and stock get back to all-time highs.

                                            Hi Howard,

With all due respect as well, I would have to say that there’s nothing ridiculous about having a preference for content (both the visual and the lexical) to be separated from advertising.

I don’t think I’m being extreme to suggest that visual placement in a show implies tacit endorsement of that product (if it didn’t companies wouldn’t be willing to pay for it). This is particularly problematic if people don’t know that the Dell is advertising not content, which would happen if someone skipped this show and didn’t see the change called out.

In essence adding a paid for product on screen implies you like the product, when really you like being paid to have that product on screen.

Think of what the old media New York Times would look like if its’ articles featured products and services that were paid to be mentioned in the article. Even if the mentions weren’t even remotely related to the topic covered in the article I think we’d be justified in viewing that as problematic.

On a final note, I’m no lefty anti-free market Naderite (I work on the street for crying out loud), but I think these guys have a good point:

                                            http://www.commercialalert.org/issues/culture/product-placement

That said, I do appreciate your calling out the change in the beginning of the show. If you added a little disclaimer at the beginning of every show (Laptop furnished/paid for by Dell) itwould make you guys a leader in how to deal with the compromises of product placement.

                                            -Christian

christian - now you make some fair points and offer advice.

OH! I get it! Product placement is like subliminal. So the Options Xpress trailer with LC’s testimony of Kalt’s unfaithfulness would subconsciously suggest that Options Xpress is unfaithful to their customers. Duh!

The message I’m getting Howard is you want to make a buck. Take a lesson from CostCo, customers before investors.

                                                  • howard Lindzon One year ago

Richard - we love you but now you are being a smart ass.

It’s not about what I want…I made a buck..of course that’s what I wanted..so did my wife and creditors and investors.

The trade-off I thought and still think is to talk about stocks and companies at or near all-time highs and start a conversation.

The costco analysis is bullshit (in my opinion). CROX is up 300 percent. My job is to help find more of those and discuss them and help you find them and ride them. If dell makes it possible for 3 more months so we can keep innovating and add more ideas…all the better

That Dell is a real computer?

I got the video from iTunes feed and it seems that it was placed digitally. I see above that Lindsay got a MacBook at the table.

Put a 14.1″ HD Widescreen Red Inspirion.

                                                      That XPS Computer is huge!

You should switch the color of the Dell depending on Lindsay’s outfit. That’s how you please this customer. As for switching the computers, who cares? I’ll forget you had an Apple in a week. The computer is, as pointed out by Emerson, pretty huge.

And please understand that you are now being called “sensitive” by two guys who wear tights on stage, prancing around saying, “Thee” and “Thou”. Get the picture? Toughen up, investor guys! I could probably tell you the color of Lindsay’s tops for the last 5 shows, but the brand of laptop?

                                                            • maximo One year ago

Christian is pissed off! He left me in the dust in the drama department. Selling out is the American way! He’ll be back though…this show is too good to be mad at for very long.

Also Dell is coming back soon. They bought Alienware, so that gives them some cool mojo in my book. And the notebook you see on Wallstrip borrows from Alienware. Check out the link: http://www.alienware.com/microsite_pages/back-to-school/notebooks.aspx

As to the Blue Nile segment, I have to say this is a trend that will be short-lived, but that’s good for momentum traders yet deadly for a long-term investor like me. Yes, Blue Nile dominates the online jewelry market but that is highly dependent on strong supplier relationships. So the growth story has been written by a ghost writer. If suppliers end their current contracts, Blue Nile is in serious trouble. Diamond dealers have agree to sell their loose diamond inventory to Blue Nile, but it is not an exclusive contract, so once you get new players the story will be different. Also say hello to Tiffany’s! It’s nice to have a physical store with beautiful sales reps assisting you while contemplating dropping half a paycheck.

Oh, and the cost of diamonds is going up and that certainly will hit Blue Nile hard because they will raise prices, taking away the incentive for people to buy online.

Blue Nile is indeed the Dell of the Diamond industry. They basically build -to-order. They match the diamond with the setting and they get paid before they have to pay the supplier. How is that for a Dell product placement?
