The Fair Trade stuff sounds like a good idea… but I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve heard it’s bass track in some other song.

There is too much coffee on the market, and low coffee prices are a signal telling coffee growers to grow something else. Fair Trade seems to me to try and artificially buck that trend, in a manner that seems destined to end in tears.

In my opinion, the Fair Trade stuff would only work if every single premium penny of profit that Fair Trade coffee commands was spent trying to get the coffee growers to grow something else or train them for other work.

You bring up a good point - mpbk - that being ‘Fair Trade certified’ gives companies like Starbucks a feel-good gimmick for raising the prices of their coffee beans.

That said, Oxfam (www.oxfam.com) does the most work with fair trade and provides a good amount of information to the public.

Is it not a little early to be so smart. my head hurts

I do feel that “fair trade” is a great thing. I just wish it didn’t have to be a selling point and could be the norm. Green Mountain is a strong company with one of the best marketing divisions around. It’s still not a household name so it has plenty of room to grow. Lindsay, a you a runner? You’re looking fit, no need for the resolution diet on your part.

I’ve always liked the idea of Fair Trade, but feel mpbk brings up an excellent point. That said, I think the majority of consumers will play the word association game rather than really delve into the pro’s and con’s of Fair Trade. Therefore, in my opinion GMCR has a solid marketing strategy in tact being that they are “Fair Trade Certified.”

I drink a lot less than I used to, about 9 cups a month these days. It’s impossible to go cold turkey on coffee.

                          • Kristine One year ago

Jo….One way to go cold turkey off coffee is to wait for a really bad cold or stomach flu when you really can’t stand the thought of it then when the desire starts to come back switch to strong Earl Grey tea. It’s a slowly escalating and smooth buzz without the highs and low’s of coffee. So WS, is there a tea company with all time highs?

                              Kristine -

i love it. I am not sure. PEET - Peets coffee and tea has done well but not at all-time highs
