Wallstrip takes on water conglomerate Suez (SZE). The footage in this episode was provided by the excellent documentary Thirst. Roger Nusbaum has some good takes about Suez. And if you’re not ready to wade into water stocks, but want to dip your toes, try (PHO) - an ETF that tracks water stocks.

Nice early find by Roger in 2004. Kudos.

A very important episode. This is going to be one of the most critical issues of the new era to be sure.

Excellent WallStrip episode…I really like the ones about companies no one has ever heard of.
I like Evian’s model better:
Deliver (much more expensive) water to people who don’t need it at all for a huge profit. At least then the anti-globalization/socialist special interests won’t protest you.
Quick note to all of you out there….if I’m ever stuck in the desert without any water and within 24 hours of death, I will pay you a handsome profit if you go to the trouble of bringing me some water. I also promise that afterwards I will not call you evil for making a profit from it….just bring it! :)

Yes Howard, always such interesting finds here.
Didn’t Vivendi get its start in the water world? Yep water & waste for Parisians.

Andy,
Why do you take all of our references to corporate greed personally? Time for a karma check?
Andy One year ago
Lindsay….what you call “corporate greed” I call “capitalism” and no, I don’t take it personally at all. And by the way, I prefer Dharma to Karma because I am in a constant state of Moksha.
I hope I am right in assuming that you don’t take my jabs at socialist special interest activists masquerading as “documentary producers” either (on sale for $250/VHS tape! Price Gouging?) :)

Lol.

You are all dorks.

Andy,
You should watch Thirst before you make assertions about what the producers are or what they’re masquerading as.
And that’s the educational/institutional price for Thirst. Bullfrog is an educational distributor, and that’s about standard price. You’re buying a public performance license, rather than a private license.

Adam,
It’s really not necessary to see the video. One simply needs to tour the company website. There you will find an abundance of videos devoted to showing the evils of capitalism and globalization, including this cute little catchphrase that pretty much sums up the mission of the “film”: “THIRST reveals how the debate over water rights between communities and corporations CAN SERVE AS A CATALYST for explosive and steadfast resistance to globalization.” Sounds perfect for 13 year olds in public schools to me!
OR— One could simply go to the website of their most often used “journalist”, John Pilger to see him in full action, shaking hands with and breathlessly praising none other than “Socialist Revolutionary” Hugo Chavez: http://www.johnpilger.com/page.asp?partid=269
OR — One could see Pilger’s amazing interview with “Socialist Worker Online”….
OR– One could do even the slightest bit of research on John Hoskyns-Abrahall and Winifred Scherrer, the principals of Bullfrog films.
Anti-American, activist driven propaganda filth that happens to be well made.

Dude andy you rock. Thanks for the insight. Lovin the comments today dorks!
Adam Elend One year ago
Except that Bullfrog films didn’t produce this film, Andy. It’s the the educational distributor.
Bur in any case, the documentary “Thirst” did not contribute to the editorial content of today’s show, nor did the producers. However, they did generously allow us to use visuals from their documentary to make our show better.
Lindsay Campbell One year ago
Andy, I just want to let you know that you actually used the following phrase in a sentence:
“Anti-American, activist driven propaganda filth that happens to be well made”
That’s funny stuff.
Andy Swan One year ago
Adam, sorry. You’re right…I should have used the term “socialist activist distributor” instead of “producer” before. I’m a rookie on the roles of people in film :)
From the “Thirst” website, which I assume the producers have some control over:
http://www.thirstthemovie.org/ThirstStudyGuide.pdf
Note—this is designed for TEACHERS to use on impressionable students….
Everyone should read it and decide for themselves if this is or is not biased, socialist propaganda piece—if anyone is interested, which I’m not even sure I am anymore :)
And yes, I agree 100% that it’s very HIGH quality work that Wallstrip viewers are fortunate to see. I just don’t understand why they’d not want their own statements about the mission of the film and “learning materials” for distribution to public schools out there for all to see?
Again….it’s a great episode of Wallstrip and quite frankly, I wish we had more outright editorial content from Lindsay and you guys…it’s intelligent and witty stuff and great entertainment!

Lindsay,
Thanks….wasn’t sure how else to describe films by Chavez supporters until I saw that they were Chavez supporters. Thus the incoherent nonsense that my Wife calls Andy-babble :)

I, as a water resource engineer am here to tell all of you (as noneya says - “still dorks”) that your all full of water. Water is why I chose my profession - you need it to live - job security at its best.
Begin SOAPBOX
Go read “Cadillac Desert” for a real out west perspective on WATER! Eventually the environmental movement will realize that hydropower is the BEST way to generate electricity and provide water supplies for the growing worldwide population.
China has a little hydro power/water supply project.
End SOAPBOX
Lindsay, you can tear that boy a better “NEW” asshole than that. Don’t hold back.
Another great show and WATER is where IT is at - beats gold hands down.

Great episode - and a worthy topic for debate.
While the socialist model never would or could work in the United States, that doesn’t mean one can automatically discount any idea they back, and I believe this to be just such a case. The day that the first wars that will be fought over water will likely be in most of our lifetimes. I, for one, believe that merely getting water to every one that needs it will be a nearly insurmountable task. If you divert even a small fraction of the energy it would take to accomplish that goal and expend it by trying to turn a profit, the goal will be unachievable. In my opinion, it would only expedite the bloodshed and the death-by-dehydration.
Also, fact check: I believe people generally die after THREE days without water, not seven. And that’s if they’re not moving around much.
Again, great episode.
